Group trip photos: one album instead of five camera rolls

Five people go on the same trip. Five people come home with a few hundred photos each. Every one of those five sets contains something the other four would love and will never see.

The intention is always there. Somebody creates a group chat titled with the destination and a plane emoji. Four photos get posted in the first week. Then everyone gets back to work.

Trips have a particular problem

Unlike a wedding or a party, a trip isn't one evening — it's a week, and the group splits up constantly. Two people go to the market, one stays by the pool, someone walks up a hill at six in the morning and comes back with the best photograph of the entire trip.

That means no single person's camera roll is even close to the whole story. The gaps aren't at the edges; they're everywhere.

There's also a bandwidth problem nobody plans for. Half the trip happens somewhere with no signal, so anything relying on live upload quietly fails at exactly the moments worth photographing.

What works better

Set the shared album up before you leave, not on day three. On day three everyone is somewhere with bad wifi and no patience.

Give it a fixed end — a moment when the album opens for everyone. A trip with no deadline produces a folder people mean to add to and never do. A trip with a reveal the day after you all fly home produces a reason to spend your shots well.

And pick something that tolerates being offline. Photos taken up a mountain should sit patiently on the phone and send themselves when the hotel wifi comes back, without anyone remembering to do anything.

The reward is the bit people underestimate: seeing the same week through four other people's eyes, including the two days you spent apart.
